Overview

My research team of three discovered we were frustrated with how people use mobile devices in museums – a space traditionally created for educational experiences for deeper thought and viewership. We then conducted research to understand how might we create deeper thought and viewership in musesums using mobile devices.

Discovering the Opportunity

My team and I (art curator at Guggenheim, business consultant at Deliotte and me) designed a wireframe app called “Musesumee” to conduct initial research to understand user needs, jobs to be done, and a check-in feature that allows users to meet up with other patrons inside the musesum they are inside.

Results: The check-in feature recieved positive feedback which lead us to hypothesize that the patrons and users invested in the concept of an interegrated mobile social experience e.g. meeting other patrons within musesum to foster deeper conversations and thought about art.

This solves our fustration of mobile experiences become commercial spaces and creates an opportunity to use mobile to foster educational experiences for deeper thought and viewership within musesums.

Why Augmented Reality (AR)?

In order to further the idea of fosterinng educational experiences for deeper thought and viewership within musesums using mobile devices, I discovered Augmented Reality can fill that gap.

When patrons go to musesums with their mobile device, the main use case of the device is to take pictures and share with others on social media and/or download the musesum app (if available) to listen to audio tours.

What if instead of taking pictures of art and sharing on social media they can learn more about the art directly and meet up with other patrons to talk about a piece together through augmented reality?
